Island of the Blue Dolphins By: Scott O'Dell

Karana is a girl who lives on the Island of Blue Dolphins. One day the Aleuts come to hunt the otters that live on the coast of the island. The captain of the Aleuts promises that all trades will be fair. When the captain of the Aleuts does not keep his promise a fight breaks out on Coral Cave. In this fight her father dies. When the white men come she and her brother and supposed to go with them to the main land for a better life.

Before they are about to leave her brother says he has forgotten his fishing spear. Karana tells him not to go but this does not stop him from going back. Going back for his spear means getting left behind. Karana feels it is her duty to back for him so she  jumps off the boat knowing that she can never go back. With limited resources and a pack of wild dogs on the loose she must find a way to survive.

For many, many suns and moons she waits for the ship to return for her. But it never does and Karana decides that she must make the island home again.
